"Chinese & Chosen" Bat Mitzvah

"Chinese & Chosen" has been following Nicole's Bat Mitzvah journey over the past 12 months. We've attended Hanukkah and Passover dinners at the Chan Ostrow House, celebrated Nicole's graduation from the Jewish Cultural School and Society and documented a video about her Yiddish speaking Chinese grandfather.

Her big day was on October 6, 2012 at the Orange Lawn Tennis Club in South Orange, New Jersey. Her program stated "because Nicole is both Jewish and Chinese - a cultural , spiritual, and ethnic hybrid, a hapa in Hawaiian - her bat mitzvah service reflects the breadth and depth of her family life and experience.

The service was led by celebrant Beth Sandweiss, who welcomed guests by ringing Tibetan bells. Nicole chose 18 readings ranging from the I Ching, or Book of Changes, The Four Noble Truths, and various other writers, psychiatrists, artists, poets and journalists.

After each reading, family and friends added to a Kiddush cup which was passed on from her grandpa Mike. For the Chinese side, Nicole participated in a traditional Chinese coming of age hair dressing ceremony.

We hope you enjoy this short video that documents Nicole's "Chinese & Chosen" Bat Mitzvah.

Nicole Chan Ostrow is both a secular Jewish Bat Mitzvah and a sixth generation Chinese America
